Server Virtualization Brick

Server Virtualization Brick

Univ. of Hawaii - ITS Technical Architecture - Brick

Server Virtualization

Primary Architect:  Steven Sakata

Description:    This brick describes the server virtualization technologies that ITS will use to manage its servers housed in the UH Data Center. It does not include server virtualization technology used by other vendors (e.g. cloud vendors) to manage our servers.

Experimental

  • Hyper-converged: Nutanix Acropolis, HPE Simplivity

  • VMWare extensions: NSX, vSAN, vCloud

Strategic (3-5 Years)

  • VMWare vSphere

Tactical (1-2 Years)

  • VMWare vSphere 6.5

Containment

Retirement

Emerging Trends

  • Over the past few years there has been a strong trend toward hyper-converged architectures that merge compute, store and virtualization in one integrated solution.

  • We expect the need for the seamless movement of servers from on-prem to vendor Clouds, which requires the increased use of Hybrid Cloud enabling technologies.

  • Desktop virtualization comes up year-after-year as a potential need for the University.  In the future we may need to incorporate VDI in this brick or in a new brick.

Change History

  • Approved - March 2018
