Responsibilities
The Technical Architecture Committee (TAC) will be responsible for the following activities
Establishing ITS technical infrastructure and related standards
The TAC will develop a set of published standards and principles in regards to what environments, protocols, middleware, software and hardware ITS will use to implement and support new systems.
Maintaining technology lifecycle roadmaps
The TAC will develop and maintain a set of published lifecycle roadmaps that categorizes technical components in these traditional lifecycle phases: emerging, mainstream, containment and retirement.
Review technical components for all new implementations
In advance of implementation (and hopefully selection), ITS Project teams will bring their plans to the TAC for an architectural review. TAC will validate that proposed architecture fits into ITS standards and if not, will escalate issues or propose changes to ITS standards.
Develop and propose ITS technical strategy as appropriate
This group should discuss broader more strategic issues such as: when and how should ITS systems move to the cloud? What emerging technologies should ITS plan for?
Regularly review and update standards and roadmap deliverables
TAC will be responsible for keeping any deliverables such as standards or lifecycle roadmaps up to date. Reviews will likely occur on rotating basis with each deliverable being periodically reviewed and updated. A regular review process will ensure that the ITS architecture will evolve over time and react in a reasonable pace to changes in the IT and higher education industries.
Membership
TAC shall be made up of the ITS staff that are serving in domain architectural roles. In the past, these roles have been very informal, but through the TAC these roles will grow more formal over time. The TAC will periodically update the TAC Membership document as needed to keep the list of ITS domains and members current.
Committee Sponsor
The TAC will be overseen by the Director of Technology Infrastructure. The TI Director may either serve as the chair the TAC or the director may designate the TAC chair.
Any cross-organizational issues of significance will be escalated to the ITS Directors.
Timeframe and Meeting Schedule
The TAC should meet sufficiently often such that it is relatively easy for new projects to get on the agenda and to be reviewed in a timely manner.
