Cloud Computing Principle
Univ of Hawaii - ITS Technical Architecture - Principle
Cloud Computing
Principle
UH will adopt cloud computing services on a case-by-case basis taking into account functional, financial and logistical factors.
ITS will pursue training and proof-of-concept opportunities to help our staff learn about cloud computing architectures and methodologies.
ITS will be a leader in the UH system preparing the institution for use of cloud computing services. This will include helping to establish standards and shared contracts that will make it easier for departments, researchers and individuals to leverage appropriate cloud-based services.
Background
For the purpose of this principle, “cloud” refers to commercial public cloud services.
ITS expects our use of cloud services to grow over time, but we also expect to maintain a sizeable on-premises footprint for the foreseeable future.
Adoption of Software as a Services (SaaS) cloud services is already beginning to emerge at UH (e.g. Google, Kuali Curriculum Management, rCampus OneCloud) and will likely continue to increase as new applications are pursued by the University.
There has been no adoption of Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) by ITS, but this will likely begin soon and grow.
ITS will pursue training and proof-of-concept opportunities to help our staff learn about cloud computing architectures and methodologies.
Preparing our staff has two important consequences. First, it helps ensure ITS has the right skills in place when the need to leverage cloud services increases. Second, it helps our staff members better prepare for career opportunities that may emerge in the future.
ITS will be a leader in the UH System and prepare the institution for the utilization of cloud computing services. This will include helping to establish standards and shared contracts that will make it easier for departments, researchers and individuals to leverage appropriate cloud-based services.
By “leader” we mean that ITS will try to find ways to enable and support others in the adoption of cloud services. Our goal should be to make it as easy as possible for members of the UH community to use the right tools to solve their problems.
