Tournament Procedures

Overview

The singles tournament will consist of two parts: a round robin and a single or double elimination. The determination between a single elimination or double elimination tournament will depend on how much time is remaining after the round robin concludes.

Round Robin

The round robin component of the tournament will consist of a best of 5 to 11 points. You must win by 2. See subsection How to Play a Match for more information.

Single/Double elimination

The format for the elimination tournament can be decided by the players - either a best of 7 to 11 points or a best of 5 to 11 points must win by 2. If players cannot agree on which format will be played, a single sudden death match will be played - winner take all. See subsection How to Play a Match for more information. *Match format must be decided PRIOR to the match start.

How to schedule a match

  1. Add the ITC Table Tennis Google Calendar - hawaii.edu_9j9cf8bic33arhlt4bp5bvgad0@group.calendar.google.com
    1. Adding the calendar follows the same instructions as outlined on Adding the ITC resources to Google Calendar
  2. Find a time to play - communicate with your opponent (phone, email, text, chat etc.) on when you both would be available to play.
  3. Schedule your match - add a new ITC Table Tennis calendar event with the following title (Ex: Ryan C. vs Jon O.) or similar. You can also add both participants to the event to receive event notifications prior. The match will take place at the table tennis table in the ITC 4th floor Cafe at the agreed upon time. *Note - We do not have exclusive use of the table, so if others are playing, you will have to wait or reschedule.

How to play a match

Warm Ups

  1. Performed prior to the game starting

  2. Players may decide how long warm-ups will last

Scoring

  1. Players will keep track of their own scores during each game - these scores will need to be submitted later so write them down or have someone keep track. See Submitting Match Results for more info.
  2. Should a player win 3-0 or 3-1, you may play the rest of the games for practice but they do not count and should not be submitted in the match results form.
  3. Scores for each game will need to be entered into the corresponding match submission form for your bracket (https://uhawaii.atlassian.net/wiki/display/IL/1.+Singles)

Rules

  1. Dead ball = point ends

    1. We have seen people continue to play balls which bounce off the ceiling and onto the opponents court - for tournament play, the ball is considered dead when a contestant hits it off the ceiling, a wall, a spectator, etc.

  2. Serving

    1. before the match, decide who will serve first (coin toss, rally, etc):

      1. serve (if selected, coin toss loser will choose the side to start on)

      2. receive (if selected, coin toss loser will choose the side to start on)

      3. select a side to start on (if selected, coin toss loser will choose to serve or receive)

    2. switch serves every 2 points

    3. switch sides every game

    4. if score of a game reaches 10-10, switch serve after every point

    5. notes on legal serves:

      1. ball must be visible to the receiver

      2. ball must be tossed from a flat palm (cannot cup the ball or hold it in the fingers)

      3. ball must be tossed at least 6 inches vertically before being struck

      4. cannot impart any spin on the toss

      5. ball must be struck behind the server's end line

  3. Tie Breaker

    1. if a 5th or 7th game is needed, switch sides after a player reaches 5 points - there will be no side switching afterwards

Submitting Match Results

After a match is completed, someone will need to submit a match results form for the corresponding bracket match (forms can be found: https://uhawaii.atlassian.net/wiki/display/IL/1.+Singles). Once the match form is submitted, the corresponding rating/stats sheet will be updated with the match you just entered. Should you submit a match result with incorrect data, please email itstalks@hawaii.edu with the correct data.
