  1. How do I access the Open onDemand interface for Koa?

Users of Mana can access our Open onDemand instance by navigating their browser to either  https://koa.its.hawaii.edu

  2. How large of a file can I upload using Open OnDemand?

Currently uploads are limited to about 5 GB in size.

  3. What web browsers are supported?

The developers of Open OnDemand recommend Chrome, Firefox or Edge.  They explicitly state that Internet Explorer 11 is not supported.

  4. What security precautions should I take when using Open OnDemand to access Koa?

It is highly recommended that when you are using Open OnDemand, that you use an incognito/private browsing window.  The reason for this is so that when you are done using Koa through Open OnDemand you can securely logoff by just closing the browser.  If you were not to use an private browsing window, you run the risk that if someone else uses your computer soon after you, they could restore your browser tab or history and be connected to the cluster as use, being granted access to your files that are stored on Mana.  Please see the following ASKUS to learn about private browsing. https://www.hawaii.edu/askus/922

  5. I require a graphical interface for my work, such as using Microsoft Visual Code.  Can I do this with Open OnDemand?

In our Open OnDemand instance, we do provide an interactive application called "Desktop".  This application starts what is known as a VNC server on the computing node allowing for a Desktop to be displayed back to the user.  Within this Desktop environment  Visual Code is installed for use.

  6. The Desktop Interactive App locks the screen after being idle.  How do I prevent this?

By default, the Desktop app comes as a clean configuration, so it has a screen saver and screen lock enabled, with a fairy short idle time out (5 minutes).  To disable this, when you start your Desktop session, go to Applications → Settings → Screensaver.  Within the screensaver settings window, turn off the screensaver (Enable Screensaver) and then go to the Lock Screen tab and turn off Lock Screen (Enabled Lock screen). These settings should get saved in your home directory, so subsequent visits to the Desktop Interactive App should have these settings disabled.

  7. Where can I find more information about Open OnDemand on Koa?
