Email Relay for Apps (SMTP)

ITS has established smtp.hawaii.edu for the UH Application Developer community to use in application development. Given that a large number of printers and other appliances now point to mail.hawaii.edu, the intention is to establish a separate SMTP server for developers in order to help insulate applications from any issue that might crop up with mail.hawaii.edu.

smtp.hawaii.edu

  • Recommended for application developers to utilize in UH applications that generate email messages

  • Port 25 is only available from within the UH network (see "Troubleshooting ..." below).

  • The infrastructure for this service features a load-balancer and two physically isolated virtual hosts.

mail.hawaii.edu

  • Legacy SMTP server

  • Will continue to be used by the various departments for setting up printers, scanners, etc.

Email Sending Limits

For more information on sending limits, please consult these resources:

Service Limitations

  • This service does not relay mail for @hawaii.edu users from non-UH networks.  In other words, it is not available for use by outside service providers.

Troubleshooting smtp.hawaii.edu

  • Cannot connect.

    • ITS is allowing all UH networks to connect to smtp.hawaii.edu:25. Check your server and firewall to ensure that outbound connections on port 25 are permitted.

    • If you are configuring a username and password for your mailer software, don't.

Access is no longer available from the UH VPN due to spam coming from user's desktop/laptop due to malware/virus. For more on the UH VPN: <http://www.hawaii.edu/askus/819>.
