% = Wildcard.

Wildcard is a great tool to use to find similar codes and descriptions. The field search is case sensitive. Remember that abbreviations have been used to meet character limits. In which case, search by using the first few common letter of the abbreviation. Use wild cards in between words. Example: %Auto%Tech%

CIP Code

How are CIP codes assigned in Banner?

Program description, outcomes and curriculum is reviewed by IRAO staff to select a CIP code.  Campus may be consulted during the process.  The primary purpose of the CIP code is to align to the academic outcomes and not workforce outcomes.  If campus and IRAO does not agree on the CIP code, the CIP recommendations by both parties will be reviewed by UH System Academic Affairs or UHCC Academic Affairs for a decision.  Please check with these academic affairs offices for their procedures.

How do I find the CIP code for a Program?

CIP codes are attached to the major of the program.  To find the CIP code for the major:

  1. Go to Banner form STVMAJR.
  2. Scroll through the list OR press F7 to do a search.
  3. In the major code field, enter the major code.
  4. Press F8.
  5. Information about the major code will return.  Look under CIPC for the CIP Code.  CIP Codes in Banner does not include a period after the first two digits.

How do I find the CIP code description?

To find the UH CIP code description:

  1. Go to Banner form STVCIPC.
  2. Scroll through the list OR press F7 to do a search.
  3. In the code field, enter the CIP code without any periods.
  4. Press F8.
  5. Information about the CIP code will return.  Look under Description for the CIP code description.

Department Codes

How can I determine the department code?

One way to determine a banner department code is by checking similar programs on the campus that falls within the same department.

  1. Go to Banner form SOACURR.
  2. Search for a similar program that would be in the same department.
  3. Press F8.
  4. Select a similar code, by clicking on the field cell.
  5. Click on the "majors and departments" tab.
  6. Under the department column, a department code is shown.

Major Codes

How do I check if a major/concentration code is available to use?

  1. Go to Banner form STVMAJR
  2. Press F7
  3. Type the code in the major code field.
  4. Press F8

If a description appears, then the code is assigned to another code.

How can I find similar major/concentration codes?

  1. Go to Banner form STVMAJR
  2. Press F7
  3. Type a description using the wildcard tip.
  4. Press F8

Descriptions meeting the criterias will appear.  Another recommendation would be to search by CIP code - search by full code or first two characters with a wildcard (ie. 13%).  Banner CIP codes do not use the decimal.

Required Terms of Enrollment

What is "required terms of enrollment"?

Additional program information for the 150% legislation that will be mandatory for institutions utilizing the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) reporting process to identify all programs that require student enrollment in any term other than the traditional Fall and Spring semesters.  Although a majority of the programs within the System follow the typical Fall/Spring enrollment pattern, there are some Campus programs that require mandatory enrollment in Summer and/or another Extension-type terms, and these programs will need to be identified.
